Ready for an experience of a lifetime? You might be wondering if a long drive and an uncertain entry guarantee is worth it and the answer is yes! This tour is a must if you’ve never seen an active volcano and even if you have this one is well worth a visit in the dark to experience the spectacle up close.

The Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th Century named the lava lake “La Boca del Infierno” which translates to “The Mouth of Hell”. Volcan Masaya is one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanos.

You’ll be picked up at your hotel and taken to Volcan Masaya accompanied by a bi-lingual tour guide who will entertain you with informative stories of the volcano, the surrounding area and it’s unusual inhabitants (did someone say parakeets that live in a volcano?!)

The drive from Granada to the entrance takes about 40 minutes and once inside the gates you make a brief stop at the visitor center for a look out over the lava fields before driving the last 10 minutes up to the crater.

Though the visit is limited to about 15 minutes by the park rangers, it should prove one of the memorable experiences in Nicaragua.

Plan B

If it's raining too hard or there is too much volcanic activity the rangers will close the park for the safety of the visitors. The driver and guide will wait as long as you wish to find out if the park will re-open. If you chose not to wait or it is clear that they will not re-open, don’t worry your evening is not ruined because we’ve got a back up-plan.

While you may not see lava you will experience Masaya like a local at Plaza Monimbo where you can enjoy open air food stalls serving traditional and delicious local street food and drinks. Even if you choose not to eat you will enjoy the welcoming feeling of this congregation of grandmothers and families preparing comfort food in this open air plaza.

Next up is a trip to Catarina and it’s charming traditional craft vendors. If you haven’t eaten yet we recommend a stop at The Pupusa Factory for a bite before heading to the top to look out over the Laguna de Apoyo lagoon.

We’ll have you back to Granada in time for dinner and a stroll around town.
